IT'S A SOURCE OF ENDLESS ASTONISHMENT to me that in the eight years since the first TiVo box hit the market, the cable companies and the two makers of most of their set-top boxes, Motorola (MOT ) and Cisco's (CSCO ) Scientific Atlanta, have never come close to matching TiVo's ease of use. TiVo still runs rings around the cable carriers' best boxes with its speedy response to remote-control clicks, its well-organized and easy-to-search program guide, and its really fast fast-forward.

TiVo offers some features that I've yet to see in a cable-leased box. One is remote scheduling by computer. For example, one day at work I realized I had forgotten to record the AMC series Mad Men, and I knew I wouldn't be home in time to do it. By logging onto MyTiVo, I was able to view my program guide and set the recording. TiVo even sent me a confirming email.

"For the last 5 years we have paid $200 a month for Comcast cable and a DVR that was sub par. Now that we have TiVo HD we have been able to cancel cable and still get great recordings of our regularly watched shows on public networks through an antenna (since TiVo comes equipped with a digital converter box, genius!). And for shows that are not available through public channels, we just order them off of amazon. Either way we are saving a boat load of money. Thanks TiVo!"

The TiVo HD DVR is designed for cable and CANNOT support satellite programming. For customers with satellite service, TiVo offers the TiVo Series2 Dual Tuner DVR in standard definition.
A CableCARD decoder allows a digital TV or set top box to receive Digital Cable programming from your cable provider. It's about the size of a thick credit card, and fits into a special slot built into the TiVo HD DVR.
To receive two digital cable channels at the same time, the TiVo HD DVR will require either one (1) multi-stream CableCARD or two (2) mingle-stream CableCARDs. You will need to contact your cable provider to request CableCARD decoders. All major cable companies are FCC mandated to provide CableCARDs to their digital cable subscribers. Some cable companies offer CableCARDs for free and others charge a small monthly fee.
The USB ports are for connecting the DVR to your home network with the TiVo wireless adapter.
No, only the TiVo wireless adapter allows a wireless connection to your home network. The TiVo wireless adapter can be purchased separately at tivo.com and most retailers.
Both products are designed on the Series3 architecture so the core TiVo functionality is the same. However, the TiVo Series3 HD DVR offers a bigger hard drive (250GB), THX® certification, a front panel display, and a programmable, backlit TiVo Glo remote control.
The TiVo HD DVR supports digital and high definition programming from cable and antenna. The TiVo Series2 DVR supports only standard definition from cable, cable with a box, or satellite with a box. Both DVRs can be connected to either a standard TV or an HD TV, but only the TiVo HD DVR can display in high definition on your HD TV. The TiVo HD has more than twice the recording capacity of the TiVo Series2 DVR.
The front panel lights display your current video resolution mode (i.e. 720p or 1080i). They also communicate basic TiVo functions such as power, recording, remote control activity, and download activity.
No, TiVo HD does not include an HDMI cable. HDMI cables are sold separately and are available in the Accessories section of tivo.com or in retail stores.
No, the TiVo HD does not support 1394 (Firewire) outputs.
No. In order to use certain advanced and interactive digital cable services such as video-on-demand, enhanced program guide, and pay-per-view services you would need to use a separate cable company-provided set-top box. For more information about interactive digital cable services, please call your local cable operator.
