The TiVo HD XL DVR is the ultimate HD digital cable DVR. What outputs are supported on the TiVo HD XL DVR?

Does the TiVo HD XL work with satellite programming?

The TiVo HD XL DVR is designed for cable and CANNOT support satellite programming. For customers with satellite service, TiVo offers the TiVo Series2 Dual Tuner DVR in standard definition.

What is a CableCARD™ decoder?

A CableCARD decoder allows a digital TV or set top box to receive Digital Cable programming from your cable provider. It's about the size of a thick credit card, and fits into a special slot built into the TiVo HD XL DVR.

To receive two digital cable channels at the same time, the TiVo HD XL DVR will require either one (1) multi-stream CableCARD or two (2) mingle-stream CableCARDs. You will need to contact your cable provider to request CableCARD decoders. All major cable companies are FCC mandated to provide CableCARDs to their digital cable subscribers. Some cable companies offer CableCARDs for free and others charge a small monthly fee.

What are the USB ports for?

The USB ports are for connecting the DVR to your home network with the TiVo wireless adapter.

Can I use any wireless network adapter on my TiVo HD XL box?

No, only the TiVo wireless adapter allows a wireless connection to your home network. The TiVo wireless adapter can be purchased separately at tivo.com and most retailers.

How is TiVo HD XL different from the TiVo Series3 HD DVR?

Both products are designed on the Series3 architecture so the core TiVo functionality is the same. However, the TiVo HD XL DVR offers a much bigger hard drive (1TB) which can record up to 150 hrs in HD.

How is a TiVo HD XL DVR different from Series2?

The TiVo HD XL DVR supports digital and high definition programming from cable and antenna. The TiVo Series2 DVR supports only standard definition from cable, cable with a box, or satellite with a box. Both DVRs can be connected to either a standard TV or an HD TV, but the TiVo HD XL DVR can display in high definition on your HD TV. The TiVo HD XL has much larger recording capacity than the TiVo Series2 DVR.

Can I connect the TiVo HD XL to a regular TV that doesn't support HD?

Yes, you can use the TiVo HD XL with a standard TV. It will record TV shows in HD, but display them in standard definition on your TV.

What is the purpose of the lights on the front of the DVR?

The front panel lights display your current video resolution mode (i.e. 720p or 1080i). They also communicate basic TiVo functions such as power, recording, remote control activity, and download activity.

Yes, the HDMI cable is included with your purchase of TiVo HD XL DVR.

Does the TiVo HD XL have a Firewire output?

No, the TiVo HD XL does not support 1394 (Firewire) outputs.

Does the TiVo HD XL box work with my cable company's video on demand and pay-per-view services?

No. In order to use certain advanced and interactive digital cable services such as video-on-demand, enhanced program guide, and pay-per-view services you would need to use a separate cable company-provided set-top box. For more information about interactive digital cable services, please call your local cable operator.

What else do I need besides the TiVo HD XL DVR?

You need a subscription to the TiVo service, along with either a phone line or a home network connected to a high-speed Internet connection, a TV source (cable or antenna) and, of course, a TV (HD TV recommended).
